iNkabi Microcosm and Aesthetics is an imagery series that re-imagines South Africa’s multifaceted subcultures. The series attempts to dispel the stereotypes associated with the word ‘iNkabi’. In isiZulu, the word translates to a ‘hit-man’ hired to assassinate taxi owners. In our context, we have reimagined iNkabi as a youthful and contemporary being who does not conform to the Western fashion ideas, hybridizing traditional and modern style.

Starring the iconic leopard print, found on the polyester stretch fabric Ingwe vests and the Converse Chuck 70’s, re-imagined for a new generation with stitched panels, lace-up front fastening, a round toe with a contrasting toe cap. The printed logo together with the flat rubber soles completes these OG silhouettes.

Shot by Johannesburg-born photographer Tshepo Mogopodi, styled and assisted by Kalahari Marrakesh. Self-proclaimed street aesthetic Thato Bokote and Van Storkovic (a pantsula-activist in his right), star as ‘iNkabi’ on the backdrops of Kagiso Township, West of Johannesburg.”
