Cultural Conflict: Encouraging African Pride.

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

Cultural Conflict is about how as South Africans we are starting to turn our backs on our culture to adapt to Western traditions. What I am bringing to the nation’s attention is that we are becoming ignorant to our roots as we shift ourselves to Western practices and traditions. The passion behind this concept developed from my sense of being a religious person, growing up in a religious home, believing in both God and Ancestors.

"We try so hard to speak foreign languages while we fail to speak our mother tongues"

I see the strip away from my own culture due to how my ways change daily to being Western but still try to hold onto my traditions and culture. We see the Chinese and Indians carrying their culture with pride all over the world in business, at work, school, and social classes. Why do South Africans fear so? South Africans change right the moment they meet a different race person from online or person-to-person with the fear of judgement and no sense of belonging. We try so hard to speak foreign languages while we fail to speak our own mother tongues. Why do South Africans do so?

What a viewer can take away from this piece of art is that no matter where we go carry who you are, carry your roots with pride and joy. Just because someone does not understand who you are, why you do what you do and why you believe in something they don’t, don't change and abandon your ways to satisfy or be part of a group.
